Saitek has been putting joysticks and controllers into the hands of gamers for as long as I’ve been playing games on computers. Wait On in 1979 when there really was no such thing as flight sim enthusiasts Saitek started making computer peripherals and has been a leader in the market ever since. My recent review of the X52 Flight Control System and all its improvements over previous flight controllers shows the progress the company has made in keeping current with the needs and demands of gamers and the Pro Flight Rudder Pedals continue this great tradition.
The Pro Flight Rudder Pedals are a no fuss solution for flyers who want rudder pedals with toe brakes in a convenient and easy to expend package. The rudder pedals are adjustable for large and small feet and are very simple to install. I unpackaged the Pro Flight Rudder Pedals and set them up under my desk with the included strips of Velcro to hold them from sliding around on my carpet.
There are rubber feet on the underside as well for smooth floors or two strips, both sides, of Velcro to attach to the bottom of your pedals using the adhesive side and indents on the bottom of the pedals. You can use the other allotment of the Velcro to attach to your floor to keep the pedals in place or like I did just use the hook side of the Velcro and the carper acts as the other side, they quit effect really well. I have to pull hard to get them off the floor to adjust their spot.
The Pro Flight Rudder Pedals adjust by pushing in a pin and moving the toe portion of each foot pedal up or down for different sized feet. The pedals also adjust for tension using a round know in the middle of the pedals for more and less tension while moving the pedals back and forth. They do not adjust for more and less space between each pedal though. The Pro Flight Rudder Pedals also come with two removable footrests that are nice for resting your heels on during flying those long missions. They snap onto the bottom of the base and add a place for you to place your heels and calm be able to control the rudders and toe brakes easily.
Installation is easy, simply plug the USB connector into your USB plug on your computer and speed the enclosed installation CD. This will install the drivers and SST program that controls the rudder pedals. If you already have any other Saitek product you will be familiar with the Saitek Smart Technology Program. This program installs and runs several drivers for any Saitek peripherals but if your installing just the pedals it will only install some of them. I had the X-52 hooked up at the time so it went through the whole installation for that as well.
I removed the drivers and SST program to discover what it would install and it asked if I did want to install the full SST program. I chose to not install it and the rudder pedals have worked correctly in several different games using a different joystick. The drivers work for the pedals and they are correctly set up for the correct axis on many different games such as Flight Sim X, Combat Flight Sim 2 and Il-2 Sturmovik.
The installation was easy but the pedals work very well and are comfortable to spend while flying. To use the joystick to control rudder and on ground steering is not exactly easy and many joysticks do just that. The simple addition of pedals eases this movement both in air and on the ground and makes flying not only more realistic but delightful. The pedals travel forward and back easily but with a bit of noise as well so they are not exactly silent when using.
The movement back and forth has a tension adjustment between the two pedals and is easily adjusted by hand or foot. I can easily adjust the tension on the large knob with one or both feet due to the size of the knob and the rubber bumps spaced evenly around the top. The braking is not affected by this tension adjustment.
The toe brakes are also a handy feature and is also very easy to space up in many games. In Flight Sim X, Combat Flight Sim 2 and the Il-2 games the brakes were set and ready to go but you may need to spot them using the SST program. The Saitek Smart Technology Program is an easy to expend program for mapping the controls of a joystick, throttle and rudder to keyboard assignments and is pretty easy to exercise. The rudder is the easiest and you just follow the help portion for setting up any of the assignments.
For some games like MechWarrior 4 the use of rudders brings an extra axis to the control of the mech and adds more abilities to your fighting. You can consume the rudders as the entire body turn and the joystick turn as the upper body turn to increase your effectiveness in futuristic combat. This brought an additional response to my fighting in the game and adds to the fun of mech fighting. I only wish they would come out with a newer version of MechWarrior with even better mech combat but the pedals are a nice addition to those types of games as well.
I have also used the Pro Flight Rudder Pedals from Saitek with the Hotas Cougar and they performed unbiased as well with the two companies products. They work equally well using either joystick plot ups and the programming does not change from one installation to the other. The rudders assignments stayed the same from removing the X52 Flight Control System to installing the Hotas Cougar. The SST Program that I had installed with the X52 I removed and reinstalled it after having installed the Cougar and the rudder pedals worked flawlessly with the current Cougar Hotas setup.
I really devour the feel and control I accept with the Pro Flight Rudder Pedals and they are very easy to use. The pedals are a sturdy, easy to expend and comfortable design to control both rudders and braking for any flying game.
I highly recommend the Pro Flight Rudder Pedals from Saitek for any flight enthusiast who wants the added control for rudders.

It didn’t take long to realize that online journals had some very special features. The Journal and similar software conclude what notepads and pencils can’t, at least not without a dictionary or laptop nearby. It seemed so much more streamlined and organized.
Features are numerous and varied. They include the ability to store whatever you write in The Journal and, as celebrated, you can add photos or even files. I suggest you have a look at the situation to find out all the details because there are truly too many to list here. Ones that particularly appealed to me were the writing prompts as well as The Journal feature where I could set reminders for specific appointments or due dates. Hopefully, the advantages of an this online journal should be clear, including the multimedia features and ways of integrating photos and files onto your pages. Of course, for those who really like the specific feel of a pen and pencil on paper, this won’t be the same. Security and password protection get high marks from me for creating a sense of privacy and any journal that also helps me organize different areas of my life, from appointments to work information, also appeals to me. Overall, I have to give The Journal a thumbs up! I plan to use it regularly, although I confess I’ll also carry my pencil and notepad. Some habits fair are hard to break. To purchase it, you can go to the website and download it (be definite and check out the spell checker and language dictionaries) or buy it for $39.95 and up (depending on options chosen).
How about some other possibilities which exist for online blogging or for those who want to write an online diary? Here are some more products which can be compared to The Journal and its journaling software:
LifeJournal software
This one seems to have a strong focus on a diary aspect of journaling and as I explored the site, found here, www.lifejournal.com/ I saw different choices than that on The Journal website. This was actually consuming because I could see how each product had its own variations and a certain feel. What became clear at the LifeJournal place was how there were very specific journal variations designed to meet particular desires or choices. There was even a special version made for people who wanted to maintain sobriety.
LifeJournal software – other features
Ever had the rush to make a chronological history of your life? You can do that with this program or you can buy one of several versions, including ones which are tailored for teachers, Christians, writers or those trying to regain sobriety. The LifeJournal had one of the more modern health tools I’d seen, one which could keep track of diet and expend routines. If desired, hyperlinks that lead to specific websites can be added as well as topic lists which can be easily searched. If you feel like coasting on automatic pilot or unprejudiced want to find a quote to add to your pages, there is a very nifty feature which has thousands of quotes or prompts, all stored and ready to access. The only thing better would be free online journals.

PerfectJournal software
Moving on to a third possibility, PerfectJournal enters the picture, with its own unique feel or “personality” when it comes to personal online journals or journaling systems. I got the sense that this was more tailored to particular blog users, including those at Blogspot. For those particular bloggers, this might be the perfect options. PerfectJournal – features
One feature that immediately caught my attention was the ability to see a specific timeline for my writings. I liked this historical or chronological way of organizing my writing and notes. For those already familiar with Microsoft office, PerfectJournal will be a snap to learn, as it is designed to be user friendly for those who are already acquainted with Microsoft, perhaps already using Microsoft Office.

I talked to two people who’d tried this and did encounter minor bugs but that was not my experience. I note it only as a potential heads up and you can certainly find out about that or any updates at the main site. One mountainous feature? You can easily publish entries to Blogger.com and you can also keep your entries tied together by keywords, almost like a mini file folder online. At $19.95, this is the lowest priced online journal of the ones noted here.
PerfectJournal – requirements
This one works on Windows 98, 2000, 2003 and XP.
MacJournal
I felt it would be only fair to cover a Mac based journaling program, especially since such options can be fairly limited for Mac users. MacJournal5 is designed for users of Mac OS X Leopard. MacJournal journaling software – features
As you might expect, there is a double layer of security built into the MacJournal and it also has strong encryption. Users can add all sorts of content, from movies to photos, along with the usual standard words one might write in a traditional journal. What I found extremely cool was the ability to add audio or podcast entries and even publish my work on a blog, including a .mac account (of course). No wonder many of the Mac user and review sites gave this one plenty of praise…because there is plenty to praise with MacJournal.
MacJournal – pros, cons and price
The obvious disadvantage of this one is the inability to use it if you don’t own a Mac or don’t have the Mac OS X Leopard. Other than that, I can’t find much of a downside to this type of journaling option. Major pros include the huge number of blogs that this supports, including Blogger, WordPress, LiveJournal, .mac and others. The audio and podcast options stand out from the crowd as well. From PDFs to movies, you can build a journal that almost seems alive! The cost? $34.95, unless you can find a special sale or deal.
MacJournal – requirements
Obviously, you need to have a Mac computer and if you already have MacJournal 5, you can often catch free upgrades to MacJournal 5.1. Many features and fixes have been added to the 5.1 version, including the special interface just for the Mac OS X Leopard.
With all the possibilities for adding some creativity, organization or even inspiration to your life with journaling software and online journals, maybe it is time for you to check out one or more of the above products. Since you won’t be using paper, opting for one of them is a very eco-friendly choice as well and can definitely reduce the amount of paper stacked on shelves or attach in various file folders around your house or home office. You can not go wrong with a good freeware package. If you resolve that you do not like the freeware you installed, just ‘uninstall’ it. The best thing is you have not wasted any money, and your computer is easily returned to it’s pre-freeware state. Over the years I have tried so many freeware products, that I have lost count. They eventually demolish up in one of three categories; ‘The Good’, ‘The Bad’ and the ‘I will never use Freeware again’ categories. However, no matter how bad the freeware experience is, I always go back. There is objective something about finding a large tool that is free. My current freeware favorites happen to also be tools that I use to generate additional income. The freeware packages that I’ve described below have either a support center, discussion forum, or both which greatly add to their appeal.
If you decide to use freeware, it is always a pleasant understanding to first make sure a forum or customer support system is available. This will undoubtedly save you a stout deal of pain and wasted time. In addition, there are even a few good forums that are devoted to anything relating to freeware. One in particular; Freeware Forum, is a colossal resource. This forum offers freeware discussions as well as recommendations. Review Of The Logitech Harmony 890 Pro Advanced Universal Remote
In my short adult lifetime, I have owned at least a dozen televisions and A/V receivers; yet I have never owned a universal remote control. Even after I wrote the Guide: How to shop for your first HDTV, I refused to open myself up to buying an aftermarket remote. I know that this may seem like crazy talk to some of you, but brace yourselves: sometimes I even right walk up to the equipment and turn it on or off… manually. I blame my denial of convenience on the progress of technology, because it changes so quickly that all of the equipment seems to be replaced long before the remote begins to shows signs of wear. Okay, so it’s mostly all of that, but it’s also because I’m not lazy.
Regardless of my cautious approach to convenience technology, now that I have a whole new array of electronics the sincere problem begins. You see, up until 2007 I was a three remote kind of guy. The ’system’ was comprised of a television, DVD player, and receiver. Then everything changed. It all started when I bought the new Sharp AQUOS LC-52D62U 52″ 1080P HDTV, which was followed by a new 7.1 HDMI A/V receiver, and then the satellite receiver, HD-DVR, and finally a nice Windows MCE HTPC to round things out. My simple entertainment room quickly turned ugly on me, and the new collection of remotes began to occupy almost all of my table space. If clutter wasn’t bad enough, all of the equipment was brand new, which meant that I had no idea which remote went to what way.
Since none of the manufacturers filling my entertainment system shelves can offer more than simple one-device remotes, I was in need of either a deluxe remote control caddy with labeled organizer, or I would need to get a universal remote control and take a day off work just to program it. It was a quest for the unobtainable, a crawl for the unthinkable; I wanted to replace a collection of remote controls with… One Remote to Control Them All. Logitech heard my cries of despair, and presented the Harmony 890 Pro Advanced Universal Remote Control to save the day.
Short of hiring NASA engineers to build me an in-home command center, the Logitech Harmony 890 Pro Advanced is as good as handheld universal remote controls can accept. I know that someone out there reading this is going to wonder why I am praising a review product right at the introduction, and it’s because this isn’t going to be one of those reviews where the author starts out by sounding tough and declaring “we’ll find out if the biggest name in universal remotes knows how to obtain a good product”, that would just be silly. I have already searched online, and looked at what local retailers offered while I shopped for the initial equipment, so I already know that the Logitech Harmony 890 Pro Advanced is a great product. Instead, what I plan to do in this review is explain why I deem it’s so great, explain you fair how easy it was to configure, and prove to you that it’s well worth the price tag. Logitech has taken many extra steps to ensure that owners of the Harmony 890 Pro Advanced are reassured that they are getting a premium universal remote control. When you first begin the package, you find the contents nestled into two levels of high-quality velvet-coated plastic trays. The top tray stores the Harmony 890 Pro Advanced remote and charging cradle.
The lower tray contains the A/C power adapter, 4-foot USB data cable (with ferrite core noise choke), a 950mAh 3.7V rechargeable Li-Ion battery, and the Logitech Harmony Remote software CD-ROM. In my review, I decided to download the most fresh Harmony remote software directly from the Logitech website.
When the Harmony 890 Pro Advanced charging cradle is plugged into an A/C power source, the indigo blue ring lights up. This may or may not become a distraction, since the ring remains lit at all times so long as the cradle is receiving power. My thoughts on this design were mixed.
On one hand, the indigo blue ring provided a reminder that the Harmony 890 remote was not returned to the cradle. On the other hand, the remotes usually rest somewhere advance the coffee table or on a seat. This means that I must either move in the cradle nearby to where I want access to the remote, or I can charge the remote and plug in the cradle whenever I need to recharge the Harmony 890 Pro Advanced. For now, it is more convenient for me to keep the remote handy and the cradle stored away.
The underside of the Harmony 890 Pro Advanced charging cradle is contoured to provide a channel for the A/C power cable. This makes for a flush mount on top of a table of desk. Considering the large amount of technology present in the Logitech Harmony 890 Pro Advanced remote control, the chassis is surprisingly miniature and lightweight. Nearly every other remote control occupies a much larger footprint on the table state. Logitech used a bit of common sense when they designed the Harmony 890: instead of a thin remote which is long and wide, they designed the Harmony 890 with a itsy-bitsy more rise to it which allowed them to cut the length and width down considerably.
The Logitech Harmony 890 Pro Advanced could probably be considered a beautifully sculptured piece of technology thanks to the ergonomic design and smooth contours. The flat black finish is accented by polished smoke-tinted chrome buttons surrounding the LCD prove.
You can begin to see that the buttons are all laid out in similar fashion to other remotes. In order to properly control the Logitech Harmony 890 Pro Advanced in sad environments there is a “Glow” button which illuminates all of the buttons with an backlight. One of the few negative marks was discovered in the dark-chrome buttons surrounding the LCD: in low light conditions the text labels on them are very thin and nearly invisible. Alternatively, in very knowing light (daylight), the engraved text is equally unnoticeable. Unfortunately, most of the buttons I need are in this button array.
The Li-Ion batter inserts into the underside of the Logitech Harmony 890 Pro Advanced. The compartment door is very firm, but since you will likely on ever need to open impartial once, the fact that it won’t pop open and tumble the battery out may provide peace of mind.Setup & Installation

Let me begin describing the set and installation process by offering a tiny background on me. For the past seven years I have owned and operated Performance Computers Inc, which services and maintains runt to medium sized business networks. Armed with my MCSA credentials, I reach tasks like configuring a universal remote control with a small amount of disdain. For the average Joe (or JoAnne), the process may need to be establish into simple layman’s terms. But for a guy like me, a guy who puts Sever Burns in his position, this experience should be a very short and sweet one. It wasn’t.
But before I get into why exactly the configuration process wasn’t as easy as buttering bread, we should fabricate sure that you know what is needed to make it all work. But this is the Harmony 890, and the chance of the owner having access to an Internet connection is nearly obvious. in fact, it’s very likely that the average consumer looking to purchase the Harmony 890 is already a progressive enthusiast of technology.
After connection the remote to the computer and creating a Logitech account for the Harmony software, I signed in and began the configuration process. The first thing I found once I began to glean started was that the Harmony 890 was in need of a firmware update. This really pleased me, since I am a computer enthusiast who in addicted to having the latest BIOS or device firmware. Once the Logitech Harmony 890 Pro Advanced was brought up to date, I began the process of configuring my preferences.
When the Harmony software asked me about my equipment, the first thing I programmed was the Sharp AQUOS LC-52D62U. The software asked me to confirm my entry before moving on to the next step. However it wasn’t until after I went to the next step that I noticed an error. The Harmony software somehow translated this entry as “Shark” AQUOS LC-52D62U (even though I pasted in the text), which of course doesn’t exist. In any other software, I could have just pressed the “back” button. Not here, and not in this software. After the initial half-hour of frustration and submission I closed the Harmony software, and went out to dinner and drinks. The following morning, I think the Harmony software must have felt sorry for me, because it allowed me to wrap-up my configuration without further stress. In fact, I was stunned at how easy the setup became at my second sit-down.Final Thoughts
Logitech has created a piece of functional art in the Harmony 890 Pro Advanced universal remote control. It compliments my home theater system very well, and perhaps even raises the living room appearance up a notch. The color LCD is a helpful feature, especially since it acts as an on-screen assistant to help me fine tune the configuration. I later explored the Harmony software, and learned that I could customize the background with an image of my own. While there isn’t documentation anywhere as to the size and file type requirements, I found that GIF images work just fine.
Since most of my time in the living room is in the evening hours where light is dim, the dark-chromed array of buttons were a little difficult to see due to very faint back-lighting. Once I memorized which side was volume and which side was for channels, everything fell right into place and I no longer searched for text labels.
The range on the Harmony 890 Pro Advanced is unbeatable. Even when I stand over sixty feet away and behind a wall, the home theater devices have no problem receiving commands. In a larger home, this feature is invaluable.
Conversely, there was a noticeable one-second delay in-between the push of a button and the reaction of the device. This would become a problem when rapidly changing channels or adjusting volume. The remote remembers how many times you pressed the button, and the result would usually mean passing the stopping point. Conclusion
Logitech doesn’t let you forget for one moment that you have just purchased a premium product. From the sturdy velvet-coated plastic trays, to the thread fastening ties replacing standard twist ties, the Harmony 890 Pro Advanced is presented as a crown jewel.
The Harmony 890 has a look and feel all of it’s fill. Not one boxed corner or square button to be found, it truly is a sculptured piece of art guaranteed to add value to your home theater systems appeal.
Even when dropped onto a carpeted floor from a standing position (and it was often… fair for testing of course), the Harmony 890 never had a single problem. The ergonomic design offsets the LCD screen below surface level, so even in the worst accidents the screen should be safe from contact.
The fact that the Harmony 890 Pro Advanced conveniently dismisses up to 15 other remotes from my tabletop is testament to it’s functionality. There were a few tiny glitches, such as button delay and dim backlighting, but it was an otherwise very functional universal remote control. Even when the initial configuration faltered, the assistant corrected the configuration problem in under a few seconds.
Value is a subjective term in regards to a product such as this. Similar to comparing luxury cars to economy cars, the Harmony 890 Pro Advanced is not meant to be the every-mans replacement. Logitech clearly issues the Harmony 890 as a prestigious product destined for premium home theater environments. This is why the device is guaranteed to work with every piece of equipment out there, and also why it features an LCD display and Li-Ion rechargeable battery. Add to these features the additional tilt sensor power-resume, and extended radio frequency range, and the Harmony 890 Pro Advanced begins to sell itself well worth the premium price.
In conclusion, the Harmony 890 Pro Advanced comes highly-recommended for above-average entertainment centers and premium home theater systems. There is nothing else presently available for less which offers nearly the same features and functionality, except of course for the other Logitech Harmony family of universal remotes.
